How to Help - Volunteering

Volunteering

Our variety of programs hold many opportunities for volunteer involvement. We value your time, consider your interests, and can provide training for any service or event that you wish to volunteer for. As a volunteer, you can contribute to the community, make new friends, learn new skills, and make a difference to families in Central Alberta.

The Board of Directors of Family Services of Central Alberta recently adopted the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement as part of their commitment to supporting our community and volunteers.

The Code was developed in 2001 as a response to the United Nations Year of the Volunteer. The Code represents best practices in the development, support and evaluation of non-profit based volunteer program.

Family Services of Central Alberta currently has a consultant evaluating our current practices and developing our services to comply to the Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement.

Youth Mentor Initiative

In collaboration with the High Risk Youth Coalition, FSCA is recruiting and screening volunteers to be mentors for youth in programs throughout Red Deer.

Volunteer Traits:
Successful applicants will be extremely reliable and enjoy working with youth. Volunteers will also be positive role models. Mentors can look very different; some may volunteer for their love of youth and ability to work with high-risk behaviours, while others may volunteer since they too had a rough time at this age and have guidance to offer. All mentors are valued and appreciated for the unique contribution that they are able to make.

Volunteer Duties:
Initially, mentors will work together with a group of youth to allow natural relationships to form prior to meeting one-on-one. If desired, mentors may eventually choose to work individually with a youth, which could take place in a school setting or somewhere else.

Time Commitment:
The time commitment varies depending on mentor placement. Group mentorship will take place once a month. The minimum length of time for successful applicants to volunteer is a one year term.

Some local agencies will be challenging each other and allowing their staff time to mentor. To get in on the challenge, get a group of friends or coworkers together and apply! Be ready to give back to your community, help change the lives of youth in our area while having a lot of fun! Everyone wins!

If you feel that you would make a great mentor, please fill out the following mentor volunteer application form, or call 403-343-6400 for more information on the program and volunteer requirements.
